Asian-American / Pacific Islander Health Disparities
Obesity
o Although the Chinese-American population in Hawaii has a lower rate of obesity compared to other ethnic groups, they are just as likely or even more likely to have obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.
o Asian American and Pacific Islander children’s rates of obesity are rapidly increasing here and in their countries of origin.
Infant Mortality
o Honolulu County has higher than state and national averages for low-birth weight infants.
o Teenage Asian American / Pacific Islander girls are 20% more likely to have infant mortality than non-Hispanic whites.
Immunization
o Hawaii has lower than national-average immunization rates for 2-3 year olds.
o There is not good data on comparing immunization rate disparity between Asian American / Pacific Islanders and other ethnic groups.
Cancer
o After 10 years of residency in the U.S., the risk of breast cancer is 80% higher in female residents than in new immigrants.
o Asian-American women are the only demographically identified group in the U.S. for whom cancer (all types) is the leading cause of death.
o Asian-American women are the only group for whom cancer is the leading cause of death in the 25-34 year old age group.
o Asian-American mammography rates were 58% in 2003 compared to near 70% nationally.
Communicable Diseases
· Sexually transmitted diseases
o Hawaii is 6th worst in the nation in rates of Chlamydia
o HIV testing for McKinley complex residents is more likely to occur at a hospital setting rather than a clinic suggesting possible late detection and limited access to community screening.
· Tuberculosis
o Rates in Asian Americans / Pacific Islanders are 33 per 100,000 persons compared to 2-14 per 100,000 for other ethnic groups.
· Hepatitis B and C
o Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have the highest rates of Hepatitis B and C infection in the U.S. More than 10X the overall U.S. rate.
o Asian Americans with Hepatitis C are up to 4X as likely to get liver cancer than other similarly infected ethnic groups.
